Ahead of Mashujaa Day 2024, Infotrak asked Kenyans nationwide who they personally consider their heroes or heroines, and separately, who they see as the most influential person in the country today.

How the survey was designed and fielded

Data Collection Method
Quantitative interviews conducted through Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI)
Survey Sample & Universe
The universe was persons who were adults, 18 years old and above at the time of the poll. The overall poll had a target survey sample size of 800 respondents.
Precision
Margin of error of ±3.5% at 95% degree of confidence, with a 96% response rate.
Geographical Coverage
The survey covered all 8 regions of Kenya. To ensure national representativeness, the distribution of the survey sample across the regions was proportionately allocated.
Data Analysis
Data was processed and analyzed using SPSS 26 statistical software.

Who Kenyans personally consider their heroes, ahead of Mashujaa Day

Mashujaa Day is a national celebration to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to Kenya’s history and progress. In 2024, who do you personally consider your heroes or heroines — people whose actions and achievements have inspired or positively impacted you or the country? (n = 800)
Generation Z topped the national mentions at 23%, recognized for environmental activism, social justice and technological solutions. Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga followed at 18%, with support especially strong in his home region of Nyanza (30%), and notable in Western (23%) and Coast (22%). Faith Kipyegon placed third at 11%, her recognition spread fairly evenly nationwide, including 12% in both Central and Rift Valley. President William Ruto, Rigathi Gachagua and Babu Owino were each named by 8% of respondents, with Gachagua’s support concentrated in Central Kenya (25%).
Respondents could name more than one hero, so mentions do not sum to 100%.

Has Kenya Done Enough to Honor Its Heroes?

Do you think the country has done enough in recognizing the heroes and heroines of this country? (n = 800)
65% of respondents believed Kenya had not done enough to recognize and honour its heroes and heroines, against 35% who felt it had. The sentiment was strongest in Coast (75% No) and Central (72% No), while Nairobi respondents were most likely to feel enough had been done, with 42% saying Yes. Women were more likely than men to feel the country had done enough (41% vs 29%), and younger respondents aged 18–26 were more critical than older groups.

Who Kenyans see as the most influential person in the country today

Influential people are those whose actions and opinions strongly influence the course of events, shaping people’s views, perceptions, and even behaviors. In your opinion, who is the most influential person in Kenya today? (n = 800)
Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga topped the list again, with 26% of respondents considering him the most influential person, especially strong in his home region of Nyanza (42%) and notably high in Western (34%) and Coast (39%). Dr. William Ruto, the President, was seen as influential by 7% of respondents, strongest in Western and Central Kenya. DP Rigathi Gachagua (6%) and Hon. Babu Owino (5%) followed, with Gachagua gaining most recognition in Central and Rift Valley, and Owino drawing support among urban youth in Nairobi and Nyanza.
